I have been growing lettuce indoors in the basement for a couple years now.  To my surprise when I removed the cover from the latest tray of sprouts, I found an even layer of moss growing over every inch of soil underneath them.  I had never encountered moss growing indoors before although various kinds grow outdoors here including something ( Read more... )

Every year I plant the same things... tomatoes, bell peppers, and cukes. This year I decided to add in some new stuff for variety. (we are trying to eat healthier = more veggies!)  I got a little excited at Walmart yesterday when I saw the garden stuff out and bought some seeds without researching. Ok, so I'm working out a list of supplies I'll need to get when I get home and those that my boyfriend can get from his grandfather (who's grown his own produce forever). It's still pretty hot in Oklahoma, but by late September it should be comfortably warm going into the cooler climate by October. I did a search and I live in zone 6B. Anyone have ( Read more... )

Garden as it actually exists now. Green background is temporary grass clipping mulch, brown is more long term pine mulch. White graph paperish area is not yet tilled or planted. Corn is in the ground but future will include raised beds in this area. Raspberries are in ground and will stay there.

I'm working on my first vegetable garden. I built two raised beds and filled them with a mixture of vermiculite, compost and peat moss. My seedlings are started inside and some are looking stronger than others. I'm wondering when I should put them outside. I live on the zone 5B-6 line. Just wanting to satisfy a few curiosities brewing inside after a leisure trip around the yard with my dog. I found a mint of some kind, a lambs ear, some other mint with some pink things on it... then I wandered around to the side and the front to check out what I have growing out there. Peas and lettuce is doing well.  One of my hot peppers is not, though-it's a chili pepper and it suddenly had all of these baby peppers on it and immediately started getting all wilty (no pictures of it, though).  It's watered well, and the jalepeno right next to it is just fine....  Not sure what I'm doing wrong or if it has too many peppers on it ( Read more... )

6 days ago, I direct sowed lettuce seeds into my new raised bed.  And then it rained.  And rained.  And rained some more.  I was pretty sure they were goners, washed away in the flood...  But this morning, there are little tiny sprouts!  I am already dreaming of salads!
